Late May - early June

Late May is an exciting time of year as the garden really begins to create a show of colour. The wisteria covers the west side of the house and the early flowering yellow rose dominates the entrance on to the terraces. Many shrubs are coming into flower such as the ceanothus, azara, fremontodendron, azaleas, tamarix and lilacs. Lupins and early aconitums are already adding colour to the borders.

The Rose Garden still has some tulips in flower into the second half of May and the water garden is coming into its peak period for colour with the yellow of the azalea and laburnum lighting up the area.

Many of the 40 or so varieties of iris are flowering at this time of year and the striking purple alliums put on an early show.

The Acacia Border is an early performer with the silver foliage of the cardoons, green/yellow euphorbias and tree paeonies giving structure to the bed. A mass of alliums are coming into flower along with irises, aquilegias, astrantias, violas and nepetas. The Wild Flower Meadow is now a sea of meadow buttercups. There should be a few ragged robins coming out as well as ox-eye daisies and many other native flowers.
